Guordan Banks, a unique blend of classic charm and free-spirited creativity, has made a significant impact in the music industry with his soulful voice and poignant lyrics. Growing up in a musically gifted family, with a jazz-singer grandmother and an organist grandfather, he was singing in key before he could walk.
His remarkable journey includes writing for stars like John Legend, Kanye West, and Keyshia Cole, experiences he describes as pure magic.
Driven by a commitment to support music industry workers, he established the Mirror Musicians Fund (MMF). Despite reaching #1 on the Billboard charts as an independent artist, Banks remains humble, inspired by his faith and a desire to give back to his community. His story reflects a deep dedication to his craft and a commitment to uplifting others in the industry.
How would you describe yourself?
Classic but still free-spirited.
What motivated you to start the “Mirror Musicians Fund (MMF)”?
After reviewing the qualifications for other relief fund programs for music industry workers, I realized that most folks wouldn’t qualify. I wanted to create a fund for working musicians, tech workers, and others crucial to the creative process.
Tell me a little about how you first got into making music.
My family is full of singers. I could sing in key before I could walk! My grandmother was a jazz singer, and my grandfather played the organ.
What was it like writing for John Legend, Kanye West, and Keyshia Cole?
It was pure magic. I felt like I belonged in the room. They all have such vision! I learned so much from working with them.
How was your experience collaborating with Chris Brown on the “Keep You in Mind” remix?
Chris is so much fun to work with! Bryson Tiller actually got Chris on “Keep You in Mind.” He was on it first and then asked to step back.
How did it feel to become the first independent R&B artist to reach #1 on Billboard?
It felt unreal! We had no idea it was even possible for an independent artist to achieve #1. We had been kept out of that spot for so long, but we never gave up. God doesn’t let you fail when you put Him first.
What would you be doing if you weren’t pursuing music?
I really couldn’t say… maybe I’d be a lawyer!
How did you react when “Keep You in Mind” was selected for President Obama’s Valentine’s Playlist?
It was insane! I couldn’t believe it; so many people could’ve had that moment. I was super thankful.
Are you currently working on any music projects? What should we expect from you soon?
I’ve been focusing on hooks lately and want to dip back into hip-hop a bit. I’ve got some cool surprises lined up!
What message do you want to share with your fans?
Never let the devil see you cry. Keep your head up in the face of adversity because it won’t be the last time you face it. Be one with God and love yourself; remember, He made you in His image.
